Early in the development of digital cinema there was a fear among purists that digital pixels would never be able to compare with the soft celluloid of the primal ingredients of light and shadow. No more. I’ve been in the habit lately of watching more closely the cinematography of long form, binge-streaming productions, where the visual artists take their time creating atmospheres rivaling ageless filmmakers, like Murnau, Tarkovsky, Welles, and a cavalcade of others who used the camera as a fine art instrument. Sometimes I’m so taken in by certain images that I actually take my cell phone and snap pictures of some of these images, knowing that I’m degrading them but creating a new atmosphere. “Insect Trust” is built around a few quickly snapped photos of the seriesĀ Hanna. My collage has nothing to do with this story, but by assembling the fragmented images, I wanted to create a new atmosphere, somethey grey, gothic ,and forbidding. Add a few insects and some menacing alien bug–and voila: a new world.
