A few years after Stavin’s Chain disbanded, I continued to record with Chris George, arranging his songs, trying not to ruin them and distract from the sincerity of his various endeavors to understand the universe and the elusive virtues of love and desire and justice. Raised on British pop and California surf music, I found it humbling to peer into the eyes of American blues and folk traditions and not blink at my own growing affection for Americana. I chose “Guilty” as a feature cut because it best represents the immediacy of American music born of hope and desperation in the bosom of the Black experience.
